I'm sitting on a pile of laundry. Granted, it's clean, but I'm sitting on it. It's just that as soon as I open a page to compose a post, I remember that I have clothes to fold, diapers to assemble, dogs to feed, dishes to wash, or a baby starts to cry.

So, I'm sitting on the laundry. Quite literally.

Sometimes I still get extremely overwhelmed. I can't seem to help it. The house still isn't finished, the washing machine broke, the Jeep needs new tires, the front tire of my stroller burst, and the xBox broke. Every time we turn around, something else needs about $850 thrown at it. It's ridiculous.

The weekend found me stewing about our new washer and dryer. I mean, how stupid is that? My husband buys a fantastic new washer and dryer set, and I'm pissed off about it. Sometimes I'm a moron.

The washer is sick. It will wash 31 bath towels at once. Not that I own 31 bath towels or that I plan to, but whatever. It's very proud of the work it does. When it's done with a load, it plays a tune. A full out song - not a bell tone, but a virtual symphony. "AHHHH! Your clothes are CLEAN!!!" It's the most noise the thing makes ever.

But it doesn't fit in the existing laundry room. They are too deep, and the only solution was to move them out into the new part of the house. Into my office/sewing/crafting room. The room that I had all laid out with my sewing machine, serger, ironing board, storage, filing, and art supplies for the boys. It was going to be our create-space.

And now I'll have to do chores in it.

Oh my stars. I am SUCH a whiner. But I was sad. Granted, I'm over it, but I was sad.

Until tonight, when I happened to discover the musical talents of our new washer. Just when I was cursing having to find shoes to go out to the unfinished floor full of sawdust, wire cuttings, and random nails, that stupid washer began to sing a little song; telling me my clothes were CLEAN! LA LA LA!

And I had to smile. I keep saying, and it's true, "It's all going to be lovely."

Kevin has declared 2009 the year in which nothing was finished. My new shiny outlook gets to declare 2009 the year in which many things began.

Either way, we still have major construction going on at our house.

It's going to be lovely when it's done.

That's my mantra. I say it three times as I breath slowly and stare out the back into the mud and mess. Really, it's not that bad. It is going to be lovely, and Rob, our contractor, is an amazing miracle worker. Truly.

2010 will be the year for finishing a lot of thing though. The house will get finished. Our family will be complete. Kevin will finish up a lot of lingering projects at work. He's really looking forward to it.

I'm okay with not being finished though. I'm kind of looking forward to starting a bunch more new things in 2010. Here are a few that come to mind:

1. Becoming a mama of two boys.
2. Learning to live without the extreme highs and lows I've had.
3. Tandem nursing.
4. Writing and recording again finally.
5. Getting back in shape.

Lovely will be starting high school. Little Bird will be starting multiple days of preschool. And my littlest boy will be starting life.

So here's to never completely finishing and finding plenty of new things to start in 2010.

Happy New Year, everyone.

This was first thing this morning. The City of Raleigh said on our last bill, which was e-freaking-normous, that we were using 625 gallons of water a day. No way.

Kevin checked the meter while all the water was shut off in the house, and it wasn't spinning. There were no signs of water in our front yard. We assumed our meter was whacked and asked them to come check it.

They declared our meter to be working fine and then slapped us with a "leak notice" that came with 48 hours to fix it. Today, in the cold and rain, Kevin and Mr. Rob rented a backhoe and went at it. They replaced the main water line to the house, so there is no more leak. However, in the meantime, they also cut right through the AT&T trunk line for the street.

The "no cuts" people didn't mark that one. Oops.

Our yard, which had such lovely lovely grass, is now a mudhole. Our DIY plumbers are finished and the AT&T crew are finished. We have phone, internet, and water again. It's a trade off for the grass, but what are you going to do?

But wait, there's more.

Here's how happy Little Bird was all day. If it weren't for his big sister being here to play with him, this look would have permanently frozen on his face. His teeth are torturing him. He has top molars that have been coming in for MONTHS. Now, his bottom canines have stalled out in a position where they are close enough to be able to be seen right below the gum, but the gum hasn't broken yet. Add on some awful seasonal allergies that he inherited from both his daddy and his mama, and you have one miserable little boy this week.

Mama ain't happy either.

To top the whole day off, it turns out that the SPCA here is not a no-kill shelter after all. I talked the the adoption center today because a sweet old chihuahua has taken up residence in our kitchen, but he can't stay. If we can't find his family, we are going to have to take him somewhere.

Back to the SPCA though. The adoption center told me that they were no-kill, but that I would have to take the little guy to the lost and found pet center where he might get cleared to go to the adoption center. I feel really deceived, but perhaps I had just been misunderstanding all along. Either way, I can't take him there. He is so old; he will never get cleared for the adoption center.

Poor little dude. He's sleeping soundly on Kevin's lap right now. He can't stay here though. Bird has already tried to sit on him and pet him WAY too enthusiastically. Plus, Aja and Gibson are about 100 times bigger than him and are not excited about the possibility of a new pack member. Plus, plus, the little chihuahua has been growling at the big dogs as though he could take them on at the same time, when in reality, Gibson could eat him in one bite. We are not a good home for this little guy.

Besides, he has a home. It's pretty obvious. He wants to be with people. His fur is evident of long time collar wear. He doesn't stink. He isn't thin. And I don't know how to describe it, but you can tell that he really really wants to go home. It's breaking my heart.

Tomorrow doesn't have to be much better to beat out today. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

He's taunting me. I leave the front door open to let in the sunlight through the storm door. When I walk by, he doesn't budge. He dares me to come running out the door, cursing and waving my fists at him.

Sometimes I chase him all the way to the dogwood tree, shaking it until he runs up into the neighboring pine.

Sometimes I just sigh in defeat and kick the storm door. Those times, he sits still on the railing, staring me down, never missing a beat in the rhythmic devouring of the leaf he has stripped from my hibiscus.

I hate that damn squirrel.

"Squirrel" is the newest word in Little Bird's vocabulary. He has learned to go to the front door and yell it out to me, just to see me come running to save another branch of my soon to be naked topiaries. He steps aside and chants, "Squirrel, squirrel, squirrel," rolling the r's in that odd little baby way that he does. He likes it when I make it all the way to the tree shaking.

Gibson stands next to him, drooling. I should let him take care of that squirrel.

It was only the one on the right for awhile. However, today, when I opened the front door for the first time, there he was, hiding behind the planter on the left. He peeped around it, and I swear on my grandmother's box of handwritten recipes, he waved.

I really hate that damn squirrel.

Two weeks ago, my front stoop was flanked by two beautiful hibiscus topiaries full of lovely deep pink blossoms. Today, I didn't even bother to sweep it off or pull the weeds before taking pictures. It wouldn't have mattered. My flowers have been ravaged.

The biggest surprised is that the squirrel didn't stop and pose as I snapped photos of the devastation he has wrought.

He had better watch out. I'm planning my revenge at this very moment, and he just might find himself making a lovely rug for some Barbie's Dream House living room.

Damn squirrel.

Our house is officially on the market. When I saw the listing online last night I cried. I love our house. We have put so much time and work into it, planning to stay here for awhile.

That plan was derailed.

A new job for Kevin in a different city. It's just too far to drive, and as much as I love where we are, it certainly isn't fair for me to push to stay here when I'm not the one commuting. I know that moving out of Raleigh will also enable us to have something newer, larger, and nicer. I know these things.

But seeing our house out there, on the market, made me sad.

I followed the photographer around today, wondering what she saw through her lens. Did she see a house that was updated and ready to sell? Did she see the home we have created?

Did she see how we removed our disco ball and put it in storage for the time being so that people wouldn't get their chuckles from the pictures on our listing?

Some people won't like our artwork. It's modern. It's local. It's funky.

Some people won't like our paint colors. The family room actually has the word peach in the name. Yes, I know. The eighties live on in our family room and we like it.

Some people won't like our backyard. Because it is seriously neglected.

Some people won't like Lovely's bathroom. Unless Pepto Bismol is their favorite color. I should never be allowed to pick paint colors. Ever.

What I hope they see when they look at our house is a kitchen that is large and inviting. I hope they stand in it and can imagine how well a family fits there. How there is room for 2 or 3 people to be helping at the same time. How it is designed to cook and bake and to serve a family.

I hope they see a master bath that has been brought into this century. When they look at it, I wish they could see through the walls and the floor to know how much work Papa and Kevin put into transforming it.

I hope they can stand in the nursery and know how much love went into every board we laid. If they knew that, then they should also know that I was seven months pregnant while laying that floor. I wish they knew that it was a nursery that carried me through the loss of one baby and into the gift of another. That I sat in that Lemon Chiffon room and prayed and prayed for it to be needed for our child one day.

Beyond all of the things that other people will think are weird in our home, I hope that they see a family who has been happy here. Rooms for children. Rooms to make music. Rooms to cook together and eat together.

I hope they can tell there is a lot of love here.

And I hope, seriously hope, that it doesn't smell like dogs. Ha. Hahahahaha. Ha.

Here's the kitchen. The cabinets are probably older than me, but thank goodness they put in granite countertops and cheap appliances with some stainless on them. Now? It's a gourmet kitchen. Right.

Here is the room where you pile up all of your crap. Why? Why would you take a picture of this room and think that it would help you sell your house?

Ah, an extra bedroom. If you are a bird.

But best of all? That is a DISCO BALL in the cubby next to the fireplace. Most people would put firewood in that cubby. But not this house. This house comes with a disco ball in the cubby.

Someone had better snatch this one up quickly. It's a catch.

I think we have all watched enough HGTV to know that there is a certain amount of staging that happens when you try to sell a house. You do not post the most unattractive points and use those to show people what a fabulous home you have. If you are showing me only a picture of a birdhouse, I might wonder what is wrong with the actual house. How different would that house look if they cleared out the basement and took the picture of it clean and empty - we would say "Ooh, look at all that potential. What a great place for my disco ball." I don't think Canape was putting down the owners so much as the realtor's faulty marketing.
And when leaving a comment chastising for someone for making insensitive comments, why did you choose to do it anonymously? ----- COMMENT: AUTHOR:Anonymous Anonymous DATE:Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 7:36:00 PM EDT Susie
I logged on as "anonymous" because it was the easiest/fastest way to comment on something I felt passionate about. My name is Christine and I have been a lurker on this blog for many months and hitherto have not been inspired to respond. I have been enjoying and loving Canape's motherhood experiences along with the rest of you.
I was not in chastisment mode when I posted my comment. I was trying to convey to Canape that when you demean others, you are doing it for your own self engrandisment - and that ends up to be a negative on many levels. Why do you need to put others down?
Easy answer - to make yourself feel superior.
To find happiness and peace, you need to let that go. It's not hard. It's NOT about what others are and what others HAVE - it's about YOU!
So someone has a disco ball - breathe and let it go. What do you know - maybe those people have 3 foster children to whom they have given a new life. Look beyond the disco ball - life is not superficial and material and ... taste.

I want this to be a positive not a punitive for Canape who has communicated that she is struggling with her self-worth. Christine (aka) anonymous ----- COMMENT: AUTHOR:Anonymous Susie DATE:Friday, August 22, 2008 at 10:03:00 AM EDT Dear Christine (aka anonymous),
First let me say, I don't think you are wrong. I think you are absolutely right that when someone is putting someone else down, it is often from their own personal insecurities. And don't we all struggle with our own self-worth?
But was Canape being really all that demeaning? I guess I don't take it that seriously. And demeaning is a pretty strong word. In fact, that could have been my house in those pictures being made fun of - can you say "Harvest Gold?" Seriously, Canape would not want to buy my house.
And if this post was born from house-selling insecurities, you will see from her latest post that she wears those insecurities on her sleeve and is quite aware of it. There will be people who will walk through her home and poke fun and her decorating choices. No doubt.
Thank you for answering my comment and delurking/decloaking. It is brave of you to do so and it's way easier to have a discussion with someone when you know their name. If you may email me if you would like to continue our discussion. If not, then we can leave it here and respectfully agree to disagree.

Here are some of the highlights of my search and some of the things I've learned. All of these photos are lifted right off the realty website. Some people might say I'm a thief. Cheater, cheater, sneaker.

Anyhooooooo.

I don't want to see pictures of your stuff. Like these. Here are some pictures of people's beds. Not their bedrooms, just the beds. I'm not buying your stuff. I want to see the house.

If a listing says "contemporary," it's wrong. Contemporary means about 30 years old. It means 1980's construction with lots and lots of wood, very little windows, and apparently, painting everything down to the basketball goal a monochromatic brown.

Just how many fake animals do you see in this room?

See this tiled countertop? The owners did this themselves. And it's covering up something much worse underneath. Cheap fix. Bad fix.

Then there are the pictures that make you think, "If this is what was worth showing, I hate to see what wasn't worth showing." For example:

And the are pictures that you just don't even know what they are:

But my favorite is this house. The one that comes with the old people. And their dog.

Who took that picture and thought it was a good idea?

There could be a whole other blog just for totally bad real estate listings. I see a new project in the making.

Just for fun, I had him click through the pictures tonight so that I could tell him which rooms could have a Christmas tree in them and which rooms couldn't.

We got up to four trees before he became totally annoyed at me and ended my fun.

I have to have some fun with this. The process completely stresses me out.

I've lived in Raleigh for 10 years now. It feels like home. My roots have dug in deep here.

But this house? Two trees, and that's pushing it. So I'm willing to think about it.

I was working at a Habitat for Humanity site a few months back and I was even planning out where the family could put their Christmas trees!! It's a sickness but one I'm willing to deal with! ----- COMMENT: AUTHOR:Anonymous whymommy DATE:Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 11:54:00 PM EDT But will one fit in the BATHROOM, Canape?

I want to see that bathroom tree this year! ----- COMMENT: AUTHOR:Anonymous Susie DATE:Sunday, June 8, 2008 at 12:36:00 PM EDT I love a tree in every room too! Thanks for leaving me a comment and I think you are right - either there are not many bloggers here in the Triangle or they just don't talk about it. I've only had one other "live" person admit to me that she even reads blogs. I sometimes feel that my blog obsession is my own little dirty secret. ----- COMMENT: AUTHOR:Anonymous Bubblewench DATE:Monday, June 9, 2008 at 6:40:00 AM EDT This.. just cracking me up. And what Whymommy said! Bathroom Tree! YEAH! ----- COMMENT: AUTHOR:Anonymous Fancy Pants DATE:Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 9:14:00 PM EDT I know where one tree is going to go. :) ----- --------
